My new Kivik slipcover and a Comfort Works Giveaway!

Happy Sunday—this post is coming to you from a cozy spot on my new living room couch! Well, the couch isn’t new but the look sure is. Here’s the back story:

Shortly after we first moved in nearly a few years ago, we purchased this Ikea Kivik sectional in Teno Grey:

It was perfect and we loved it. But then I started updating the room, and my style began to evolve…

Still loved the couch, but the amount of greige in the room and lack of pattern was becoming a bit too plain for me. I was bored—ready to step out of my comfort zone and spice things up a bit. That and, well, there were a couple stubborn stains I couldn’t get out. It was time for a facelift.

Luckily, a nice lady named Rachel from Comfort Works came to my rescue and offered to let me choose one of their fabulous slipcovers. Normally I decline these offers, but I couldn’t pass this one up. I was like a kid in a candy store browsing through all the fabric options on their website…

My perfect dream couch is made of fluffy white cozy linen goodness… like this:

But I just… can’t. I don’t understand the logistics of this couch. In what world would it not be stained and ruined forever in one day? I mean, we’re clean people and we don’t even have children and it still would never work. Someone with a white couch please explain how you do it (without spending 3 hours a day on stain removal/laundry duty).

So anyway, after I let go of my white couch dream, I started thinking of ways to liven things up in there. I found some Pinspiration…

Get the idea yet? STRIPES! I’ve always loved stripes, and what better way to take a risk than on a slipcover I can switch up when I need to?

So I requested my fabric samples—a mix of stripes plus some neutrals thrown in there, just in case:

In the end, I decided on ‘Somerset Mint’, which is the far right swatch with the blue & tan stripes.

I showed a closeup of my cover next to my new rug last time…

Meant for each other <3.

The other night I invited a friend over to help me swap out the covers. With my couch it required a littl
e disassembling, and the extra set of hands helped on some of the tighter fitting areas (these covers fit nice and snug, exactly like the factory!)

And a couple hours later the room was transformed:

Can you spot the kitty?

I also switched out the pillow covers, and I’m really happy with the final results after everything came together:

I’ll admit, I was slightly nervous at first about the change. Going from something that blends into the background to something a bit more in-your-face can take some getting used to. But the more I see it, the happier I am with my decision.

I think it feels homier. The room has more character.

The fitment is spot on, and I am so pleased with the quality. You’d never know the couch didn’t come this way from the factory.

My new grain sack pillows feel right at home here…

I’m glad I took a personal risk—I think it paid off. I’m still scared of stains so I made sure to Scotch Guard it. Hopefully that will keep it nice and new looking so we can enjoy it for years to come.

What do you think of the new look? Does your couch need updating as well? Well, here comes the fun part. Rachel wanted to give one of my readers a new slipcover, too! And before you say you don’t have any Ikea furniture that needs a new look… good news: they can make slipcovers for anything! Dining chairs, pillows, bench cushions, ottomans, etc. Any piece of furniture you have, just give them the dimensions and they’ll work with you to make something  custom and perfect.

Check out these Pottery Barn dining chair slipcovers they made for Jami at Freckled Laundry

Drool.

You can check out what else they’ve done in their Gallery or Facebook page. I’m so glad I found them, because custom slipcovers with super personalized service isn’t easy to come by. I predict more of their slipcovers in my future.

Want to win a slipcover of your choice worth $150? Here’s how:

First, visit the Comfort Works Facebook page and post a photo on their wall of a sofa/slipcover you love. It can be your own or an inspiration photo… just anything that shows your style.

Then, leave a comment here saying why you’d like to win—what would you want slipcovered?

That’s it! The winner will be chosen next week and announced here on the blog. Competition is open worldwide (yay!)

I’m off to enjoy the rest of my afternoon and this warm summer day. Good luck all!

  2. Jenna Sue! Perfect timing. We are remodeling our basement ad need to put to use 2 forest green plaid chairs that my parents really want us to keep in the family. They match nothing in our home but we understand their desire to put them in our home. This would be great! Thanks!

  3. Love the new look of your couch! My ikea couch is going on 10 years old and is green and dingy… the exact opposite of what I've been restyling my room to look like. A slip cover would certainly help until I can buy a new couch!

  4. My husband and I are building a house and were just exploring slipcover options for our couches. How awesome was it for me to open your blog and see this giveaway! We would love to win to help us evolve our new home as you are with yours 🙂
P.S. good choice with your slipcover pick

  5. This is so awesome Jeanna! I have the kivik love seat and chaise and would love to update the room with an new cover. Your living room looks awesome with the mint slipcover! – Kelly

  6. Our new cat, Saul, has ruined our brown leather couch. =( We could use a nice grey slipcover to hide all of the picks and scratches he's decided to do since we got him in March. A dark grey would be perfect against the teal walls of my living room!

  7. I'd LOVE to win this for my side chair in the living room! It's cream and the sofa is white – drives me nuts! (And I LOVE our white slipcovered sofa – I just wash the slipcovers every couple of months and they're pretty much good as new. So it works for us!)

  8. I love the look of your new slipcover and would love to get one for the hideous dark paisley buttoned couch we have. It is horrible and since we are getting hardwood floors for the living and dining rooms we really need a new look for this couch.

  9. I love the slipcover that you choose for your couch. It looks gorgeous!! I went to Comfort Works page and posted a picture of the style I adore. If I win, I would love to recover my couch with is 17(!) years old. It is still in great condition, but I`m getting tired of the damask pattern. 🙂 Thanks so much for the chance to win!!

  10. I just recently bought that drool-worthy Pottery Barn couch in the washed cotton/linen in ivory! I have 3 kids at home and 2 dogs, but I didn't care. We've only had it for for a few months now and I don't regret the white slipcovered couch yet 🙂

  11. Your sofa looks amazeballs! Love it!!!! I'd love to win a slipcover for my family room sofa. Its also from Ikea but bigger. Ever since my son became a toddler, its now the ugliest thing in our room with stains everywhere. It would be nice to have something slip off and wash with no problem. Hope you pick me & make this new mommy super happy 🙂

  12. I posted on Comfort Works facebook page the Ektorp two seater sofa. After many years of renting we are finally getting a house – yeah! We are getting the Ektorp two seater for my children's playroom. Since they are fairly handy with sprinkling dirt everywhere…I'm thinking we definitely need two….to…twenty sofa covers to alternate between washes!

  13. Not to brown nose it, I actually posted your pic! It has inspired me to redo my own living room in light, airy, natural (not “neutral”) shades. Have just moved and am “starting over” so looking forwar dot creating a space that is infused with tranquility. I have an Ekeskog that is in need of an update (including redoing the stuffing in the cushions) and an Ektorp armchair that is “white” (ish). (Who lives with white?? Especially with a big dog who likes to rub his moustache on the edge of things???).

This is the comment I posted on the Comfort Works FB page. “Everything about this room is beautiful without being too designer matchy matchy. It has a homey, modern, inviting feel to it that mixes colour and texture, while keeping a breathable serenity to everything. She manages to create a space that is at once energetic as it is a place you'd like to read and nap. Though the original slip cover was nice, the new one ties everything together and makes the entire room a modern airy classic. I just may have to steal some of these wonderful ideas and make them my own :).”

  14. Oh my goodness, I am so excited to find this!!

Your new cover looks gorgeous, Jenna Sue. I'd have never thought to go with stripes, but it looks just beautiful in your home. Those colors are so complimentary. Definitely lends to a more beachy feel.

As for the giveaway – I left a comment as on Comfort Work's Facebook with a link to their own Fagelbo cover. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151791237336203&set=o.168850806458940&type=1&theater

As for why I'd like to win, I have a very ugly, worn, blue Fagelbo sofa we were given that is in desperate need of a facelift. The blue isn't even uniform anymore it's so faded & worn. I attempted to sew my own once out of dropcloth and it's just a disaster. Horrible, ugly disaster. Did I mention I can't sew? I love the couch – it's perfect for when you have guests over and need an extra place for them to sleep. But it's just sooooo UGLY. I found Comfort-Works just tonight by doing a search for slipcovers and nearly fell out of my chair when I saw their Fagelbo covers. I had no idea it could be so pretty!! I had no idea they even made these! Ugly Blue is begging for a makeover! Can't you hear her? She saw how pretty she could look and she's refusing to pipe down! 😀

  15. Your home is beautiful, I love that slipcover! I would love to win one… we have had the same green couch/sofa for about 8 or 9 years and while it has held up well, it is time for a new one. Times are tough, the economy has hit us so very hard and we have not been able to afford anything new for our home. Winning this would be amazing!! It was so much fun seeing what others chose to post on the Comfort Works FB page… love the choices! I hope I win! 🙂

  16. I love your new slip cover! We have two ilea couches with the white slipcover, and three kids! I love that I can take it off and wash it! If I won a new slipcover, i would definitely use it for one of te ilea couches to add some color to my livingroom!

  17. I'm thinking of purchasing this sofa. How is the quality & duribility? Do you use it much? Comfortable?

    Thanks!
    Angie

  18. Hi Angie, we do use it almost daily and still love it. Totally comfy (guests have slept overnight and I take weekend naps on it), especially with the new cover which is a softer fabric than the old one. I would say go for it if you're considering it!

  19. Love your new look, which now is getting old, cause it's already 2015…I am aspiring for my home to be just like this! And I especially love the kitty….we have a black cat, looks just like Salem!

  20. Love your new look, even though it's getting old, after all it's 2015! I aspire to having my home look this way….I especially love the kitty! Looks like our kitty Salem…too funny!

  21. Hi Jenna,
Could you please tell me where you bought the rug in the first two pictures?
    Thank you 🙂
